Cool tradition: When a baby turns one month old the family celebrates by making (or buying) cake to share with friends and family. Today the fifth grade teacher's assistant sent in little boxes of cake for all the teachers and staff at KAS. Today also marks the end of the month-long isolation that many new moms self-impose, plus the end of the strict diet that they follow.
There is a belief that childbirth makes a woman's body "cold" and they need to bring their bodies back into balance by eating "warm" foods. Not foods that are heated up but foods that have warm characteristics. I don't know what those characteristics are but some "warm" foods include ginger, chicken and pumpkin.
Not all mothers follow these old traditions but it seems pretty popular among the new moms at KAS.
